What you'll experience

If the Singapore River could speak, what secrets would it reveal? Step into the world of early traders, colonial engineers, wartime survivors and nation-builders on a storytelling journey through the places where Singapore’s destiny was shaped. Picture the river alive with bumboats, shouting merchants and labourers unloading rice, spices and rubber beneath the tropical sun. Imagine the smell of cargo and busy kitchens drifting between shophouses as fortunes were made along the riverbanks. This is not a history lecture.

With CK’s childhood connection to the area, the city becomes a living story filled with personal memories, local insights, mysteries and surprising connections. Through visual clues and questions, discover controversies, human struggles and forgotten episodes hidden behind elegant façades.

As daylight softens, sit beside the river for a chilli crab feast worth getting messy for. Taste succulent crab wrapped in a rich, velvety sauce that is sweet, tangy, mildly spicy and deeply savoury. Tear open a golden fried mantou, dip it into the sauce and understand why Singaporeans refuse to waste a single drop.

Afterwards, relax amid Clarke Quay’s lights and restored warehouses. Where music and diners now fill the waterfront, coolies once strained under heavy loads and river traders worked late into the day. Come hungry for flavour and curious about Singapore—you will leave seeing the river not merely as scenery, but as a witness to ambition, hardship and transformation.

What to expect

Your journey begins with a 4:00pm hotel pickup and one big question: how did a small trading settlement become modern Singapore? Follow CK, your storyteller, along the Singapore River and through the Civic District.

This is personal for CK—he spent his childhood here and shares not only recorded history, but untold stories, colourful memories and details from someone who watched the river change. Look beyond the postcard views and uncover dramatic moments that shaped the nation: the Japanese surrender in 1945, Lee Kuan Yew’s announcement of merger with Malaysia in 1963 and Singapore’s first National Day Parade in 1966.

Discover why a bridge shipped from Glasgow became a colonial controversy—and whether it was a huge engineering mistake. Then enjoy Singapore’s famous chilli crab: firm, sweet crab coated in a glossy, spicy-savoury sauce enriched with tomato, chilli and egg. Crack the shells, get your fingers messy and mop up every drop with pillowy fried mantou.

Afterwards, chill out at Clarke Quay, now a colourful riverside destination but once a gritty trading district where labourers balanced heavy sacks along narrow planks, moving goods from crowded boats into warehouses and godowns. The tour ends at about 8:00pm, but its flavours and stories may stay with you much longer
